BULLS EYE
Bulls Eye is a series of large-scale paintings exploring the cultural exchange between Jamaica and the United States, tracing how music, dance, and visual storytelling move between the two. Drawing on the bold graphics of vintage comic books and the charged visual language of dancehall culture, the works take on the scale and drama of romanticised cinema posters, reframed through a distinctly Jamaican lens.
The series reflects on the influx of U.S. pop culture into Jamaica during the mid-20th century, from Western films to superhero comics, and how these imported narratives were absorbed, reimagined, and given new meaning in a Caribbean context. One key reference is Bulls Eye by Simon and Kirby, a 1950s Western comic centred on a sharp-shooting drifter. By replacing its archetypal characters and settings with Caribbean figures and rhythms, I examine how outside imagery is not only consumed but remade into something distinctly our own.
Through saturated colour, crisp linework, and layered narrative cues, Bulls Eye interrogates the crosscurrents between two cultures and the shifting authorship of their shared visual mythology.
